22nd March 09 - Coaches View

What pleased me today was the way you were trying to pass and move throughout the team.

Positives

  • Everyone played for the team rather than themselves
  • Good sportmanship, you treated SSS with respect
  • Better communication
  • Defence was getting up the pitch quicker
  • Various moves worked better (throw in's, corners etc)

Learning Points

  • The key to remember today was how everyone wanted the ball and wanted to play once we were a few goals up, that is how everyone should play from the start of every game. If you do the performances will follow.
  • Praising and encouraging was better today, please ensure you understand the point made at the end of the game regarding the difference between laughing with somebody and at them.

Captains Player of the Match - Harry - good tackling and passing

Coaches player of the Match - James - Passed the ball very well, played well in 2 different positions.

15th March - Coaches View

As I said in the summary at the end of the game Mark and I can teach you football skills and get you organised, the will to win a game and compete comes from within, we can't give you that.

The opponents today had much more fighting spirit and the will to win, they were not better footballers but that fighting spirit makes the difference in football.

Positives

- I thought the majority of you kept trying your best to the end of the game which is important.
- Good sportsmanship at the end

Learning Points

Clearly we need to work on keeping on the off side rule. We will go back to doing this in our training matches.

I keep a review of every goal conceded, what part of the pitch it come from, who was responsible etc.

Given the number of goals today I'm going to list what in my opinion happened and the learning point without mentioning names so we can learn from today which is the important thing.

Goals 1 and 2 - Both similar goals from the right side of our defence. Good shots.

Learning Point - We were too slow to tackle the forwards, they shouldn't have been allowed to get the shots in.

Goal 3 - Ball bounced in our area from a corner.

Learning Point - We stood back and let the forward win the ball, nobody took responsibility to win the ball.

Goal 4 - Corner, they played the ball to a player on the edge of the 18 yard box.

Learning Point - Slow to react, it was obvious what they were going to do, nobody took responsibility to mark the player. When he did get the ball our 2 midfield players both turned their back which allowed the player a free shot.

Goal 5 - High ball into our box, ball was dropped.

Learning Point - As we said before the game we must be first to the ball in these situations.

Goal 6 - Direct goal from wide free kick, good goal.

Goal 7 - Player ran through 3 tackles to score

Learning Point - Tackling must be stronger, it was too easy for the forward, we must be much more determined in those situations.

Goal 8 - Short goal kick rather than the normal kick out, we lost the ball and they scored.

Learning Point - Stick to what we agree pre match.

In summary I would expect 6 of these goals to be stopped when we are playing well.

We will work on these points in training and lets make sure we bounce back with a good performance next week.

Captains Player of the match - Josh - Showed great fighting spirit, really good at encouraging the rest of the team, made some brave tackles.

Coaches Award - Jonny - Made some good saves in difficult circumstances

8th March 09 - Coaches View

In really difficult conditions I thought it was a good overall performance.

Positives

- We scored probably our best ever team goal through a combination a five passes.
- We tried to play our passing game in difficult conditions.
- There were a number of injuries, I was pleased with the way several of you played in different positions and quickly slotted into the new position.
- Great to see Ryan back
- Some good calling, in particular from Josh.

Negatives

- The defence were once again 2nd to the ball for the first goal, we need to be first to rebounds
- A basic of football is to keep your eye on the ball, you all need to ensure you do this.

Captains Award - Bradley - For hard running, good link up play and good finishing for the goal

Coaches Award - Joe, one of his best games for the club, good tackling, positional play and use of the ball.

Highworths nomination of Wasps best player - Alex for good skill going forward and a well taken goal.

1st March 09 - Shaw B

When you are all off to University and I think back on the Wasps I will remember this game for the determination and courage you showed, it really was special. Thanks

Positives

  • Attitude was excellent never giving up right to the end
  • Jonny was excellent coming off his line, particuarly in the 2nd half
  • Some very good passing movements
  • We defended much better winning the majority of 50:50 tackles
  • Several of you playing well in different positions in the same game

Learning Points

  • Encourage each other all the time
  • In training concentrate on the simple 10 -15 metre passes
  • Intelligent calling - don't just say I'm here, say "Fred, pass it square right"
  • For the 2nd goal we were not all marking goal side which let them in for the goal

Captains Player of the Match - Ben - For working hard, particuarly in the 2nd half putting pressure on the defenders, producing an excellent shot and the cross which resulted in the equaliser.

Coaches Player of the Match - Avi - Top class display
