U14's - 22nd October Update
parking and we need to alter the arrangements.
With immediate effect the parking area by the astroturf will be for the use
of coaches and parent helpers only. All other parents who need to park,
including parents who are dropping their children off before a session or
picking them up at the end, must use the main car park (by turning right at
the fountain and then left).
No-one must obstruct any of the roads, or park at the side of the roads, in
the disabled parking bays or near the stable entrances (including the stable
car park). It is vital that these simple rules are obeyed otherwise there
is a real danger that we will lose the use of the facility.
Obviously with large numbers of children taking part it makes good sense for
parents to try and share lifts as far as possible to cut down on the number
of cars on the site, particularly for the first session on Monday (6-7pm).
Lastly, the one way system will continue to operate: access to the site will
be via the main entrance (off the Liddington to Hinton Parva road, from the
B4192), exit will be via the side entrance nearest the astroturf pitch, i.e.
cars that are parked in the main car park will need to turn right and go
back past the fountain and then past the astroturf pitch".

Parking @ PGL
(Zurich), there is one slight amendment to the arrangements:
Cars should still enter using the main entrance (on the Liddington to Hinton
Parva road), but a one-way system will be in operation. From the main
drive, cars should turn left at the fountain and follow the road round to
the astroturf pitch. For those that haven't been before, there is a small
parking area there. Cars will then need to exit by continuing along that
road (past the stables) and out through the gate that comes out onto The
Hollow (turn right for Wanborough, left to return to the Liddington-Hinton
Parva road). Cars must not travel back from the astroturf towards the
fountain, as has been the case in previous years.

U14's - 31st August 09 Update
Under 14's - 09/10 Selection Policy
- Keep football fun.
- For each boy to be motivated to be fit and the best they can be at football.
- Develop not only as footballers but as people.
- The boys play for the team, not themselves.
- Wanborough are a team the boys feel proud to play for.
Targets for 09/10 Season
- Passing target of 150.
- Team to have done 10 consecutive passes in a game.
- Every member of the squad to have learnt and improved in the season (based on completed feedback reports).
- Improve fitness (based on measurement put in place by George).
- 50% of the boys who take part in the Wanborough Fun Run beat the time challenge.
- Zero bookings
Attitude and Approach
I believe with the right attitude and approach we can make a big improvement in the performance of the team.
This relates to both attitude in training and on match days. What do I expect?
- Listen and respect the coaches.
- Play the position they are asked in matches and at training.
- Always try their best right to the end of the game despite the score.
- Commit to the team, encourage each other.
- Understand impact of negative comments on team mates, e.g. no criticism or moaning when a mistake is made, I want to promote team spirit, not destroy it.
- Respect the referee, no questioning of their decisions or to the linesman.
- Respect the players, coaches and supporters of other teams
- No swearing.
- Play hard but fair, if they commit a foul, apologise, shake hands and get on the with game (even if the boys don't think it was a foul).
- At the end of the game enter fully into the spirit of 3 cheers for the opposition, shaking hands with opposition, demonstrating sportsmanship as well as competitiveness etc.
- Turn up on time and ready to play, e.g. for training have shin pads on.
- Be open in communication, if the boys have a problem speak to the team spokesman or direct to me.
What will happen if behaviour falls below these standards?
- On match days I will take the player off.
- In training ban the player from the next game or next training session (as I see most appropriate).
How will I implement this?
- Where I have given one of the boys a warning at training and in my judgement the parent should know I will send the parent a brief e mail on the reasons I gave the warning and the steps if any I want you to take (it may be just for information).
- The reason for the e mail rather than call is it takes the emotion out of the situation and quite frankly like all the parents I have busy job and haven't the time for calls.
- Hopefully it will never come to this but the sequence of events would be:
- Coach gives warning at training
- e mail to parents (plus invite to watch training from a distance)
- No improvement in behaviour = ban from training or game
- No improvement following this goes into the Club Discipline procedure
- I want you to see this as a positive, I want to take the boys performance to another level this season but this can only be achieved with the right attitude.
Team Selection
All the points above play into team selection, nobody has the right to play, at the Under 14 age group the games become very competitive.
Key points are:
- We are a squad and all the boys will be encouraged to keep playing football.
- The boys need to earn the right to play by showing the right skill, attitude, behaviour, performance and effort in training and matches.
- Some boys will be in more squads than others based on ability.
- I have never agreed with bringing on a boy for just a few minutes, however next season substitutions might not be made until the 2nd half.
- I will continue to take 14 boys to match days, it makes things much easier for me if somebody pulls out.
- The way I rotate the boys means that a high proportion of the squad will be off for a short time at one stage of the match.
- Boys may therefore come off even if they are playing well, that is the price we pay to encourage everybody although attitude, behaviour, performance and effort will be the primary factors in substitutions.
- I don't want a win at all costs approach, however I do want the boys to compete for their place. It is a fine balance, we play to win, encourage all of the boys to play and enjoy football and show the right attitude, win or lose.
You may recall that I wrote to you in August 2008 on how I break the boys into three groups, learning curve, intermediate and meets standard.
"Meets standard" is not just about ball skills but attitude as well, e.g. will keep working hard for the team right to the end of the game, will stay in the position I have asked them to do, will chase back, will not hold back from making tackles etc. In addition they tick all the other areas in terms of behaviour.
The ideal position is to get all the boys into the Meets Standards category or as close to it as possible.
Captain / Vice Captain / Players Rep
Some changes here, rather than alternate the captaincy I have picked Gareth as Captain as Josh Reynolds as Vice Captain who will take these roles until I decide to change.
I will also ask the boys to nominate a players Representative.
Support on Match Days and Training
I might need to get a parents rota in place to support me in training now that Mark can no longer help out, I will see how this goes.
Supporters
It goes without saying but no comments to the referee and only words of encouragement to the boys.
Please feel free to discuss any of these points with me, we had a great Sportsmanship result, the above steps are now about taking a step forward using my time and the other coaches to help the boys develop further as footballers.

22nd March 09 - Coaches View
- Everyone played for the team rather than themselves
- Good sportmanship, you treated SSS with respect
- Better communication
- Defence was getting up the pitch quicker
- Various moves worked better (throw in's, corners etc)
Learning Points
- The key to remember today was how everyone wanted the ball and wanted to play once we were a few goals up, that is how everyone should play from the start of every game. If you do the performances will follow.
- Praising and encouraging was better today, please ensure you understand the point made at the end of the game regarding the difference between laughing with somebody and at them.
Captains Player of the Match - Harry - good tackling and passing
Coaches player of the Match - James - Passed the ball very well, played well in 2 different positions.

As I said in the summary at the end of the game Mark and I can teach you football skills and get you organised, the will to win a game and compete comes from within, we can't give you that. The opponents today had much more fighting spirit and the will to win, they were not better footballers but that fighting spirit makes the difference in football. Positives - I thought the majority of you kept trying your best to the end of the game which is important. - Good sportsmanship at the end Learning Points Clearly we need to work on keeping on the off side rule. We will go back to doing this in our training matches. I keep a review of every goal conceded, what part of the pitch it come from, who was responsible etc. Given the number of goals today I'm going to list what in my opinion happened and the learning point without mentioning names so we can learn from today which is the important thing. Goals 1 and 2 - Both similar goals from the right side of our defence. Good shots. Learning Point - We were too slow to tackle the forwards, they shouldn't have been allowed to get the shots in. Goal 3 - Ball bounced in our area from a corner. Learning Point - We stood back and let the forward win the ball, nobody took responsibility to win the ball. Goal 4 - Corner, they played the ball to a player on the edge of the 18 yard box. Learning Point - Slow to react, it was obvious what they were going to do, nobody took responsibility to mark the player. When he did get the ball our 2 midfield players both turned their back which allowed the player a free shot. Goal 5 - High ball into our box, ball was dropped. Learning Point - As we said before the game we must be first to the ball in these situations. Goal 6 - Direct goal from wide free kick, good goal. Goal 7 - Player ran through 3 tackles to score Learning Point - Tackling must be stronger, it was too easy for the forward, we must be much more determined in those situations. Goal 8 - Short goal kick rather than the normal kick out, we lost the ball and they scored. Learning Point - Stick to what we agree pre match. In summary I would expect 6 of these goals to be stopped when we are playing well. We will work on these points in training and lets make sure we bounce back with a good performance next week. Captains Player of the match - Josh - Showed great fighting spirit, really good at encouraging the rest of the team, made some brave tackles. Coaches Award - Jonny - Made some good saves in difficult circumstances Rob |

8th March 09 - Coaches View
In really difficult conditions I thought it was a good overall performance. Positives - We scored probably our best ever team goal through a combination a five passes. - We tried to play our passing game in difficult conditions. - There were a number of injuries, I was pleased with the way several of you played in different positions and quickly slotted into the new position. - Great to see Ryan back - Some good calling, in particular from Josh. Negatives - The defence were once again 2nd to the ball for the first goal, we need to be first to rebounds - A basic of football is to keep your eye on the ball, you all need to ensure you do this. Captains Award - Bradley - For hard running, good link up play and good finishing for the goal Coaches Award - Joe, one of his best games for the club, good tackling, positional play and use of the ball. Highworths nomination of Wasps best player - Alex for good skill going forward and a well taken goal. Rob |

Learning Points
Captains Player of the Match - Ben - For working hard, particuarly in the 2nd half putting pressure on the defenders, producing an excellent shot and the cross which resulted in the equaliser. Coaches Player of the Match - Avi - Top class display Rob |

28th Feb 09 - Coaches View
Really good performances from Liam and Jack who in truth showed many of the rest of you up. To be successful at football you do need to display some desire to win, this includes tackling, chasing, blocking shots, we lacked sufficient desire today and that can only come from within, e.g. you decide if you will play like that. Positives - Good display from Liam and Jack - Better performance in the 2nd half - Good saves from Jonny Learning Points Too many basic errors, some of which are below:
I spoke to you all about what some of you did charging and shouting at the ball at the end of the game. To be clear it was embarrassing and as I said after the game if it is ever repeated or a similar thing takes place the people involved will be asked to leave the club. Up until that point we were playing hard to the end which I ask of you. That action made everyone connected with the club appear a joke which I will not tolerate. Captains player of the match - Harry, good tackling and determination throughout Coaches Award - Liam and Jack, excellent all round performance making good use of the good. Rob |

Learning Points
Captains Player of the match - Bradley - Two excellent goals, played intelligent football linking with the midfield to help us attack as a team. Great skill when scoring the free kick. Coaches Player of the Match - Josh - Exceptional game winning tackles, headers, showing leadership in talking to the rest of the team and encouraging people, used the ball well when he had the opportunity.
