Respect Campaign

Football Association Respect Campaign

All the Coaches in the League (300 plus people) recently attended a meeting run by the League, the main focus being on the Respect campaign.

Why you might ask?

  • The key reason is that over 7000 referees dropped out of the game last year leaving the number of match officials at its lowest ever level.

  • 98% of referees have been verbally abused and 27% have been physically abused.

  • 846 grassroots matches were abandoned last year due to unacceptable behaviour from players and or spectators.

  • Parents and coaches want role models in the elite game to provide a positive example for young players.

  • The number 2 priority from grassroots football is tackling the "pushy parent" placing too much pressure on their child and their childs team (generally because they are living their life through the child).

What is being done about this?

  • The Coaches are being asked to take responsibility, we have been sent information packs and attended the above mentioned event.

  • The designated spectators area has been introduced, research has shown that spectators and parents taking a step back encourages support in a more responsible way.

  • The signing on forms this season gave the required behaviour, e.g. never engage in or tolerate, offensive insulting or abusive language or behaviour.

What do I require from you?

  • Our track record in the Sportsmanship Award speaks for itself, we have been setting the standard for other teams since we began. However that doesn't mean we shouldn't raise the bar even higher.

  • I don't want any comments to the referee (this includes Mark and I), I know it is always good natured but it might not be taken like that by a young lad starting out as a Ref, therefore cut out any comments completely and we are in no danger of  upsetting the ref.

  • Could you all self police this, I'm generally not standing with you all, if anyone makes a comment to the ref point it out to them.

  • Don't tell the boys what to do, let them make there own decisions, Mark and I will pick up on learning points.

  • Remember, Children play for fun

I do want you to:

  • Applaud good play of both teams

  • Applaud the efforts of the boys after they have done a tackle, shot, header, chased back etc, e.g. after they have made a decision and done their best, e.g. lots of Well Dones.

  • We don't want to play in silence, its all about appluading effort and good play as well as success.

In summary if all clubs were like us there would be no need for a Respect Campaign, however lets lead by example as we have already been doing so our boys and the opponents enjoy the game.

30th November v Northern Lights - Coaches View

Excellent 2nd half, you all responded well to the comments at half time playing much better as a team.

Positives - Defenders heading was much improved, going forward in the 2nd half there was some very good passing doing what was best for the team rather then the individual. Defenders were also making good use of the ball.

Learning Points - We need to keep working on making it easy for team mates to pass, the key to this is the angle we give the person on the ball to pass to us. This is something we will continue to work on in training.

Captains Award - Ben for his hard work for the team, good attacking play and being really unlucky not to score.

Coaches Player of the match - Ryan for an outstanding midfield display of tackling, chasing back and good use of the ball both in defence and in the attacking 3rd of the pitch.

16th November 08 - Coaches View

The key to this game is to learn for the future, if we do that we will have a very good season.

Positives

- We kept trying right to the end of the game
- We created lots of chances
- Some good indiviual performances

Learning Points

- In football you will never succeed if you back away from tackles or blocking shots, too many times today certain players backed away from these challenges which let the team down.
- Keep to your positions, as soon as anyone gives up or stops playing where they have been asked we will concede goals which happened in this game.
- Keep to what we discuss before the game, today we nearly gave goals away by playing a short freekick in our 18 yard box and also a short throw when defending.
- Attack corners both in defence and attack.

Captains Award - Gareth - for his effort throughout the game and high standard of performance.

Coaches Award - Ben - Well deserved goal, constantly battled for the ball and made intelligent runs to receive the ball when going forward.

Sunday, 9 November 2008

9th November - Coaches View

The best performance of the season, not for the goals but for the level of passing and teamwork.

Positives - Everyone was making the right decision for the team rather than themselves, for example if somebody was in a better shooting position you were makng the pass to that player. You also kept to your positions although at times it would have been tempting  to goforward.

Learning Points - How enjoyable it is when you play like this.

Captains Players of the Match - Avi  excellent defensive work.

Coaches Player of the Match - Chris Tylee - Best performance of the season, good tackling and passing.

Wasps U13's - 4th October Update

Good news, our age group will start at Zurich this Monday, 6th October, from 19.00 to 20.00.

It is really important to note that the parking is in the main carpark and NOT THE SMALL CAR PARK by the house.

Also don't drive around to the training pitch to drop the boys off.

Can you use the side entrance just before Foxhill cross road on your right, for entrance and exit and not the main entrance from Liddington.

This is an excellent facility, it is now a hotel, the owners don't want cars driving around the grounds, if we don't stick by these simple instructions we could lose the use of the facility.

Kim / Sarah - I will give you directions to Zurich at tomorrows game.

  • 12th October - Cup -Home @ the Rec v Abbey Meades (I will confirm meet / kick off time). Squad members missing this game are Ben and James.

  • 19th October - Home @ Rec v Highworth. Meet at 13.30 for 14.00 kick off. Squad members missing this game are Ben and Harry.

  • 26th October - No game or training on the 26th due to half term

  • 2nd November - Home v Penhill - I may need to cancel this game if we haven't got enough players, grateful if those of you away for half term could confirm if you are back for the 2nd.

I was so proud of the effort today, only 11 players, 2 of which were not feeling well and you all gave everything for the team, all I can say is what an excellent performance.

21st Sept - Malmesbury - Coaches View

We smashed our passing target of 125 achieving 168 passes in the games, this was a fantastic effort. Now we have achieved the target we will do the indoor football and food near to Christmas. I was pleased you have taken on a new target of 200 passes by the end of the season.

Positives - A good all round performance, everybody stuck to their position and we tried to pass the ball as a team with the excellent results above.

Learning Points - We could have passed the ball quicker at times and we have got to concentrate on our positions at corners.

In the other teams half make sure you are in a position to receive the ball. Although it is tiring keep tracking back until the end of the game.

Captains Player of the mtach - Chris Strong, excellent defending.

Wednesday, 10 September 2008

Shrivenham - 10th Sept 08 - Coaches View

We did some good passing movements and created lots of chances. A very good performance.

Positives - We competed well from the start of the game. We tried to pass the ball around and our defending as a team is improving.

Learning Points - We need to work on our positions from corners, we also need to concentrate at all times, e.g if all the defence have run up the field follow them.

Captains player of the match - Alex - Well taken goal and good use of the ball.

Coaches Award - Gareth - Excellent all round performance

7th September 08 - Tetbury - Coaches View

Good start to the season, considering we had a new formation we played some good football with everyone playing a part in the performance.

As always there is room for improvement but we can easily work on those points in training.

Positives - Some good football played, players in the new positions did well, plus a good debut from Alex.

Learning Points - We will discuss in training, need to get back into normal routines on throws and positions from corners.

Wasps Under 13's - 24th August update

Firstly I'm pleased to welcome Alex Mitchell who has joined the squad and to his parents Kim and Don.

I would also like to wish Dan and Keir well who have decided to leave.

My Targets for the season are:

- Make training and games challenging and enjoyable
- Development of all the players
- Passing target of 130
- Team to be able to do up to 8 consecutive passes
- Implement Skills Reports
- Complete the Wanborough fun run within the time challenge we set

Friendly Games

With the start of the season only a couple of weeks away I have arranged two friendly games:

  • Sunday 31st August v Bassett Rangers (@ Ballards Ash - meet @ 10.00 for 10.30 kick off)

  • Weds 3rd September v Croft (@ Croft Sports Centre - meet @ 18.15 for 18.45 kick off).

Grateful if you could quickly confirm availability, with holidays and lower numbers in the squad we may not have enough players. I want everyone who is available to play.

League Fixtures

The attachment has our fixtures and kick off times, these should soon be updated on the FA Web site, the URL to the FA site is below for your information. This shows the league table, results etc, it is well worth bookmarking. We are in the North Wilts League, Division 3.

Squad Size

We could be at 14 boys for the start of the season which given injuries, colds during the season etc is not ideal. If you are aware of any boys that might wish to join who are of the standard to play straight away in the team please let me know. I'm afraid we can't take on complete beginners to football.

Training

I appreciate this Monday is a Bank Holiday, I will be doing training but understand if numbers are low.

From Monday the 1st Sept I expect everyone who is available to be @ training.

We will continue training at Hoopers Field until the 6th October.

From the 13th October training will be at Zurich from 19.00 to 20.00 (now renamed to the Liddington Hotel).

It is really important to note that the parking @ Zurich is in the main car park and NOT THE  SMALL CAR PARK by the House, can we also use the side entrance just before Foxhill cross road on your right, for entrance and exit and not the main entrance from Liddington.

I would prefer you NOT to drive around to the training pitch, leave your car in the main car park and walk the boys around.

The change to Hotel from Training Centre makes a big difference and is the driver behind this request from the new owners.

Wasps Web Site

Make sure you bookmark and use the site, the AGM Photo's are currently on the site.

After every game I put down my thoughts on positives / learning points from the game. People take in information in different ways so this is my attempt at helping the boys who learn by reading.

I also put the majority of updates onto the U13 page if you ever lose my em's.

Skills Reports

For those boys who haven't got them send me the 3 areas of Strengths you displayed last season and 3 areas in improvement in your game, I will then do the report.

For those of you that have completed them now the season is nearly with us I will fix up to come around and spend 15 to 20 mins discussing them.

My requirements of you

  • It is important to me that we continue to set an example on how Junior Football should be to all the Clubs we play.I know this will continue in line with the Parents and Spectators charter you have signed up to.

  • Please read the em's from Lorraine and I and act promptly when requested to take action, this is all done in our spare time, we don't want to have to continually chase people.

  • If you or the boys have any concerns speak to me about them

  • Match Days / Training - Turn up promptly, on match days the meeting time is when I expect to start the team talk / warm up. If I say 10.00 meet I don't expect you to be strolling along at 10.10. This is because in that 30 mins we do the team talk, stretches and warm up, passing and small sided game plus some activities to get the boys thinking.

Team Selection

I wrote out in detail to you last season and will be following the same approach this season.

This should be a really good season, I know many of the coaches and they share similar views on football to us, I'm expecting the majority of games to be close played in an environment which is enjoyable for the boys.

As always thanks for all your support, I look forward to catching up with you again and sharing the Wasps roller coaster ride through the 08 / 09 season
